Vermont Independent Colleges | Economic Impact

Here are some facts about Independent Higher Education in Vermont:

  • Higher Education is the 4th largest industry in Vermont.

  • 73% of the institutions in that industry are AVIC member colleges and universities that comprise the independent sector.

  • Annually, Independent Colleges provide more than $55 million in student aid from their own institutional resources.

  • AVIC colleges have a direct economic impact on the state of Vermont of more than $400 million annually.

  • The Vermont tourism industry also benefits from an additional $70 million in spending by students, families, and guests from out of state.

  • AVIC colleges are members of Campus Compact, providing countless hours of volunteer service to their communities. They are also key players in meeting the direct state needs for workforce development and training.

  • All of this is accomplished with no direct appropriation from the state of Vermont, mirroring the entrepreneurial character of the Vermont small business community.
